Medical contact lenses

When it comes to treating common eye conditions, the efficacy and patient adherence of eye drops is being explored.

Taking an alternative approach, researchers are developing contact lenses which can deliver drugs while the patient wears them.

Last year saw the technology inch closer with a team in the US manufacturing a prototype with FDA-approved materials.   Although the contact lenses are at any early clinical stage, seeking to prove its safety in cell culture and animal models, the next step is clinical trials in humans.

More recently, web giant Google has announced that it is testing prototypes ‘smart’ lenses for diabetes which measure the glucose levels of the wearer’s tears.
