1,000-year-old potion for eye infections
Mixing garlic, onion and wine may sound like the base of a good French cuisine, but it also forms the basis of a long lost Anglo-Saxon antimicrobial remedy, which may be effective against today’s antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Dr Christina Lee, an associate professor of Viking Studies at the University of Nottingham, translated a 1000 year old recipe for treating eye infections from an ancient Anglo-Saxon text, held in the British Library.
