Scanning genomes

A number of research projects have indicated specific genes in increasing a person’s risk of developing specific eye conditions.

Last year, King’s College London identified 24 genes associated with myopia.

Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) compare complete sets of patients’ genes, as a means to understand if people with conditions have genes in common.  These studies require data, however, in the form of whole sequenced genomes.

The 100k Genome Project, launched last year and backed by the Department of Health, will be one of the big projects which will provide more of this data.
