Regular eye examinations ensure that you are enjoying the best vision possible and will help to identify eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataract, and macular degeneration in their early stages. Our optometrists can also gain a useful insight into your general health from the appearance of your eyes and may detect underlying conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

At Hammond Opticians, we offer three types of Eye Examination.

Platinum eyecare plan

Platinum Eye Examination

The Platinum Eye Examination is our most advanced & thorough option and is the one which is recommended by our specialists to all patients over the age of 16.

It provides the most detailed analysis possible for optimising eye health and vision, and gives you as much information as possible concerning your eyes. It includes a full sight test and prescription check, and extends further to involve our specialised Optomap Wide-field Retinal Scan and an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) 3D scan.

It is a bespoke examination that allows us to monitor images and track any changes more closely over time with an increased consultation time to allow the information to be explained to you in an easy to understand manner.

The OCT instrument provides detailed 3D scans of two vital parts of your eye; the macular and the optic nerve, aiding the early detection or diagnosis of serious eye conditions, in particular Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma.

The Platinum Eye Examination is suitable for all patients and costs either £99.50 or an upgrade fee of £79.50 if you are eligible to claim for a standard NHS Sight Test. It is available free of charge for any of our iCarePlatinum & iCompletePlatinum scheme members.

The Platinum Eye Examination usually takes about 60 minutes to carry out and is also suitable for children.

Gold Eye Examination

The Gold Eye Examination provides a detailed analysis of your eye health and vision and includes a full sight test and prescription check, and extends further to involve our specialised Optomap Wide-field Retinal Scan. It is suitable for all ages from 5 years old.

The Optomap Retinal Scan provides the most extensive view of your retina that technology permits which helps us to check the health of your retina (the back of your eye) and detect early signs of many conditions which, if left untreated, could affect your sight. It also allows us to monitor images and track any changes more closely over time so that you have peace of mind that your eyes are safe and healthy. An increased consultation time is provided to allow the information to be explained to you in an easy to understand manner.

It is especially useful for early diagnosis of conditions that can affect short-sighted people, diabetics, smokers and those who have a family history of retinal disease.

The Gold Eye Examination is suitable for all patients and costs either £79.50 or an upgrade fee of £59.50 if you are eligible to claim for a standard NHS Sight Test. It is available free of charge for any of our iCare (Gold or Platinum) & iComplete (Gold or Platinum) scheme members.

The Gold Eye Examination usually takes about 45 minutes to carry out and is also available for children.

Eye Tests

Silver Eye Examination

This is a general eye examination that will allow us to make recommendations for use of spectacles, contact lenses or other treatments and typically lasts up to 30 minutes.

This entry level eye examination produces a thorough spectacle prescription check in addition to a generalised investigation into your eye health.

During this assessment our expert clinicians will assess the fundus (Retina, Macula and Optic Nerve), examine the External Eye, measure the Eye Pressures & visual fields (when deemed clinically necessary) and perform a basic assessment of the eye muscles.

The results will be fully explained to you with any recommendations in an easy to understand manner.

The Silver Eye Examination costs only £39.50 or can be available free of charge for any of our iCare & iComplete scheme members.

All our NHS patients are automatically given this standard eye examination at no charge (click here for NHS eligibility). They may of course choose to pay to upgrade their NHS sight test, and opt for the Gold or Platinum Eye Examination.
